Why Are My Gums Receding and My Teeth Looking Longer?

If your teeth look longer than they used to, or your gums seem to be shrinking back, it is understandable to feel concerned.
This is often described as gum recession.
What gum recession means
Gum recession happens when the gum line moves back, exposing more of the tooth.
It can happen for different reasons, including:
gum disease
long-term inflammation
brushing too hard
tooth position
natural susceptibility
Sometimes it is mild. Sometimes it is a sign that more support has been lost around the teeth.
Why this should not be ignored
Receding gums are not just a cosmetic issue.
They can be linked to deeper gum problems. If the supporting tissues around the teeth have been affected, teeth can become more vulnerable over time.
You may also notice:
sensitivity near the gum line
small gaps appearing between teeth
food trapping more easily
bleeding when brushing
Can gums grow back on their own?
Usually, no.
That is the honest answer.
But that does not mean nothing can be done. The goal is to identify the cause, reduce inflammation, protect the support you still have, and help keep the teeth stable.
Why early advice matters
The earlier gum recession is assessed, the better.
It allows us to understand:
what is causing it
whether gum disease is involved
how stable the area is
what can be done to protect it
What you can do
If you have noticed recession:
do not panic
do not scrub harder
use a gentle brushing technique
get it checked rather than guessing
