Copy of Is a Regular Hygienist Clean Enough for Gum Disease?

A lot of patients assume that if they have regular hygiene visits, their gums must be healthy.

Sometimes that is true.

Sometimes it is not.

A clean and gum treatment are not the same thing

A routine clean can help remove surface plaque and staining.

But if you have active gum disease, that may not be enough on its own.

This is the key point people often miss.

Gum disease is not just about what is sitting on the surface. In more advanced cases, the deeper supporting tissues around the teeth are affected too.

Why people get confused

Many patients leave a cleaning appointment thinking everything is sorted because their mouth feels fresher.

Feeling clean is good. But feeling clean is not the same as knowing the disease is under control.

Proper gum care is based on more than appearance.

It should include:

  • a clear diagnosis

  • gum measurements

  • bleeding scores

  • assessment of risk factors

  • review over time

When a simple clean may not be enough

If you have:

  • repeated bleeding

  • bad breath

  • gum recession

  • deep pockets around the teeth

  • signs of bone loss

then you may need more than a routine clean.

What proper gum treatment should do

Good periodontal care should help you understand:

  • what stage your gum disease is at

  • how serious it is

  • what treatment is actually needed

  • what you need to do at home

  • how it will be monitored going forward

The right care should feel clear

Patients should not be left confused about whether they are just having a clean or actually being treated for gum disease.

You deserve a proper explanation and a proper plan.
